“Nurses are responsible for medication administration, and, as with many other nursing interventions, some risks are involved. If an error occurs, a patient may suffer harm or injury which may lead to a permanent disability or fatality” (Edwards et al 2015).
Part of a nurse’s responsibility before giving patients medication is checking the 7 rights these include: right patient, right medication, right dose, right time, right route, right documentation, right to refuse. It is protocol in the hospital I work at that medications must be given by the registered nurse who draws them up. Below is a table shows causes of medication errors. Which of these factors do you think could have contributed a medication error for you?
